Limelight Classics – 7th August 2011

The next concert program – Limelight Classics – consists of a selection of favourite classics such as Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony.

The guest soloist will be acclaimed pianist, Kevin Power, playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 21 in C major.

Kevin completed his studies in Australia and London and has given concerts across Europe.  He has made many broadcasts for the ABC and he is currently appointed at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra (NRSO), conducted by Barry Singh, recently welcomed local orthopaedic surgeon Dr Won into their violin section.

Dr Hugh Won came to the  Gold Coast in 2009 and set up his surgical practice at John Flynn Hospital.  In addition to his career in surgery, Dr Won was once a concert violinist and teacher.

When Dr Hugh Won is not performing orthopaedic surgery in the operating theatre, he performs with an instrument of the musical kind in the concert hall.

At 15, he was one of the youngest violinists to play in the Australian Youth Orchestra.  He then won the National Youth Concerto Competition in 1992.  Later, he worked professionally with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Phantom of the Opera.

“Playing violin is one of my favourite hobbies, so it makes sense to join the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra to meet local musicians and to play some really amazing music,” Dr Won says.

“At our concerts you would think the NRSO was a professional orchestra.  You wouldn’t know it’s a home grown group and that the conductor Barry Singh was actually a banana farmer from around Murwillumbah!”

“NRSO puts on several concerts a year and that keeps us busy, always rehearsing for the next one.”
