Tchaikovsky: Triumph and Tragedy – 25th October 2026

Few composers understood the full sweep of human emotion quite like Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. From passionate love and soaring optimism to despair and profound tragedy, his music speaks directly to the heart. This October, the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra invites audiences to experience that emotional journey in Tchaikovsky: Triumph and Tragedy.

Conducted by Dr Warwick Potter, the concert brings together two of Tchaikovsky’s most powerful works: the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture and his monumental Symphony No. 6, the Pathétique.

The Romeo and Juliet opens with music of tenderness and romance before building to moments of conflict, passion and ultimately devastating loss. It is followed by the Pathétique, Tchaikovsky’s final symphony and one of the most intensely personal works in the orchestral repertoire. Its dramatic journey moves through energy, longing, fleeting joy and profound melancholy, culminating in an extraordinary and haunting conclusion.

For Warwick, the concert also marks a significant continuing relationship with the Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra. This will be his seventh engagement with the orchestra since his successful debut in 2014. His extensive conducting career has included Australia’s major state symphony orchestras, as well as numerous community and youth ensembles.

Tchaikovsky: Triumph and Tragedy will be performed at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre, Brett Street, Tweed Heads, on Sunday 25 October 2026 at 2.30pm NSW time (1.30pm Queensland time).
